Yesterday evening I got to attend an early fan screening for the new Bumblebee movie (Transformers spinoff). When this movie is released in theaters, I'd highly recommend you all go see it. I actually can't recall the last time I enjoyed a movie this much.

As someone who's been very critical of Michael Bay's Transformers movies in the past, I thought this one was fantastic (this has a new director). Every minute was just pure fun, and it had a very well-written (yet simple) story. Practically every character in the movie will leave an impact on you, even minor characters. This is the first time in a while I've actually laughed out loud (multiple times) at a movie's humor. Great situational comedy.

Bumblebee is inspired by the best movies of the '80s, like Back to the Future. The structure is very different from anything you'll see in most modern franchise blockbusters, which is very refreshing. There's no action during the middle hour, it's all devoted to building character and plot. When the action finally kicks in, it's some of the most satisfying action I've seen in a while. It's well-choreographed, creative, and the stakes are very clear.

Overall Bumblebee is just a blast. I think this movie will appeal to fans of classic Transformers (like myself), Michael Bay fans, and non-fans. There's something here for everyone. Out of all the movies I've seen this year, this is the one I'd recommend most favorably.

Bring on the Optimus Prime spinoff!
